Your questions answered
Sizing & Fit
How should the Atomic Court fit around my foot?
The Atomic Court is designed to fit like a glove through the midfoot and heel, while opening up into a wide, straight-toe shape at the forefoot. Your midfoot should feel snug and locked down with zero side-to-side internal movement, while your toes should have room to maintain a straight, natural position.
Is the Atomic Court suitable for low-volume (narrow or small girth) feet?
Full transparency: Because court sports involve aggressive lateral cutting, midfoot lock-down is critical. Athletes with low-volume or unusually narrow feet may experience excess space through the midfoot, leading to internal foot sliding during sharp lateral stops. If you have low-volume feet, the Atomic Court’s standard last may feel overly roomy, and it might not provide the precise containment you need.
I have fan-shaped feet (narrow heel, wide forefoot), will the Atomic Court work for me?
They can work well, but it helps to understand our specific fit philosophy. We engineered the Atomic Court's toe box to allow your toes to rest in a naturally straight, anatomical position. However, we intentionally did not design the forefoot for the widest, maximum toe splay (i.e. wider than vertical) to avoid a sloppy fit overall.
I have flat feet / I have high arches. Will the Atomic Court work for me?
The theory behind minimalist or barefoot shoes is that the shoe’s outsole is flat, and your foot should have the strength to either arch itself or flatten itself. If you are reliant on wearing insoles with arch support, the Atomic Court will likely not be comfortable immediately as it does not provide any arch support.
How can I gauge if lateral containment is right for me before playing on court?
We urge all customers to perform an At-Home Fit Check on a carpeted floor before heading to the court. Lace the shoes securely with your preferred socks, stand upright, and ensure your midfoot feels firmly wrapped. Perform a few exaggerated lateral shuffles and plant your outside foot firmly. If your foot slides sideways over the edge of the midsole floor, the shoe lacks the lateral containment required for your foot volume and should be returned unworn.
Do you recommend wearing socks with the Atomic Court?
Yes. We strongly recommend wearing moisture-wicking athletic socks to manage sweat and friction during high-intensity play. For the best experience, pair the Atomic Court with foot-shaped or toe socks that complement our wide anatomical toe box.
Shoe Concept, Mechanics & Performance
What makes the Pines Atomic Court different from conventional court shoes?
The Atomic Court combines an anatomical, foot-shaped design with court-specific performance features. Unlike conventional court shoes that taper at the toes and elevate the heel, the Atomic Court features a wide toe box that allows your toes to splay naturally, a low 12mm total stack height for grounded stability, and a zero-drop platform out of the box. In addition, the outsole is more flexible than a conventional shoe, allowing your foot to bend and flex naturally. This architecture works with your foot's natural mechanics rather than restricting them.
Will wearing the Atomic Court make me jump higher, cut faster, or instantly improve my agility?
The Atomic Court does not artificially alter your athletic abilities, nor do we make claims that a shoe alone generates speed or vertical pop. Instead, by removing restrictive narrow toe boxes, high heel stacks, and rigid arch supports, the Atomic Court enables your body to utilize its natural anatomical power, lever systems, and ground contact mechanics. Speed, stability, and responsiveness come from your own foot and leg strength working uninhibited against the court.
Can a zero-drop minimalist shoe really handle the high-impact demands of basketball, tennis, and pickleball?
Yes, when built specifically for court sports. While traditional barefoot shoes lack the lateral containment required for hard cuts and stops, the Atomic Court is engineered with a structured Jacquard knit upper, synthetic suede toe cage, and hotmelt overlays. Additionally, our proprietary Q-Phase™ polyurethane drop-in midsole provides resilient shock absorption in the thinnest possible format, so it does not create the rollover instability associated with thick foams.
Is the Atomic Court right for me?
We believe that they are right for everyone, but some people will require a longer adjustment period. The Atomic Court is a minimalist shoe - it should be an easier transition for people who are already familiar with barefoot or minimalist shoes. For people who have only worn conventional, big brand shoes (Nike, Reebok, Converse, Adidas, etc.), you will likely need an adjustment period as you work to strengthen your feet and legs. The Atomic Court will require you to engage muscles that you may not be accustomed to using.
I'm a high-level, competitive player, should I wear these shoes?
We engineered the Atomic Court as a minimalist, anatomically shaped shoe first and foremost. For high-level, competitive players, its suitability heavily depends on how much your playing style relies on the highly restrictive, rigid containment and elevated cushioning of conventional court shoes. If you are used to heavily structured shoes doing the work for your foot, jumping straight into a high-stakes match in a minimalist shoe could be jarring.
We highly recommend incorporating the Atomic Court into your routine initially as a training tool—use it for shootarounds, light footwork drills, and conditioning. As your foot adapts and your natural mechanics take over, you can gradually test its place in your match-day rotation.
Cushioning & the Drop-In Midsole System
What is the Base-6™ drop-in midsole system?
Out of the box, the Atomic Court comes equipped with our Base-6™ Drop-In Midsole. Made from proprietary Q-Phase™ polyurethane, Base-6™ provides 6mm of level, uniform cushioning from heel to toe on a true zero-drop platform. It takes the harsh edge off hard court landings while preserving maximum ground feel and sensory feedback.
What is the Alt-4™ drop-in midsole, and do I need it?
The Alt-4™ Drop-In Midsole is an optional swap-in setup that alters the shoe’s geometry to a 4mm heel-to-toe offset (10mm of cushion in the heel, 6mm in the forefoot). It is designed for athletes transitioning from high-drop conventional court shoes, players with tight calves or Achilles tendons, players with heavy heel strikes, or for recovery days when your lower legs need reduced strain.
Can I play without a midsole entirely for a pure barefoot feel?
The interior of the shoe is completely finished, while we do not recommend playing or training midsole-free, you can if that is your preference. The shoe's volume and structural lock-down are engineered to work in tandem with either the Base-6 or Alt-4 drop-in midsole. Removing the midsole entirely can result in a looser fit, reducing the intended lateral containment.
Will the Q-Phase™ polyurethane foam flatten or "pack out" over time like standard EVA shoe cushioning?
Standard EVA foam degrades and compresses rapidly under dynamic court loads. Q-Phase™ polyurethane is engineered with an ultra-low compression set, meaning it maintains its rebound, shock absorption, and structural integrity match after match.
